Survey says...

Amid all the depressing news about scientific ignorance contained in this survey (notably that two-thirds of the population supports the teaching of "intelligent design" in public school), here's some good news:
On gay men and lesbians in the military, 58 percent of those polled said they should be allowed to serve openly, a modest increase from 1994, when 52 percent agreed. Strong opposition has fallen in that time, to 15 percent from 26 percent in 1994.
Slowly but surely, the good guys are winning the fight for gay rights and it's only a matter of time before "don't ask, don't tell" is rescinded.

Americans have sunk deeply into this idea of consumer comfort. They buy the clothes and cars that make them feel comfortable, they choose the religious beliefs that make them feel comfortable, and so they also think they can choose the scientific views that make them feel comfortable. If you feel squeamish about evolution, that’s ok, we will give you a choice that is more comfortable. Wouldn’t do to have the kids feel bad about what science tells them, would it?

Somehow we have done a very poor job overall in teaching Americans about what kind of project science is. Perhaps our science classes need to spend some time showing why non-scientific ideas are not science. One of the most disturbing aspects of what the Kansas Board of Education is up to is the idea of changing the changing the definition of science in their state standards. They would recognize as science ideas and practices that scientists do not recognize as science. This is a rather broader attack.

Perhaps Americans are slowly becoming more comfortable with gays in the military. At least most people would probably agree that the present policy is stupid and should be changed. Odd, though, that the anti-gay marriage campaigns didn’t drive this poll the other way. Will Americans mostly end up being comfortable with gays as long as they are not married?

Actually, I'm also confident that Americans will someday also be comfortable with gay marriage. The trends are on the side of the angels: ten years ago the very idea of even civil unions was deemed ridiculous; when Howard Dean signed the civil union bill in Vermont a few years ago people were up in arms saying this was outrageous; and now civil unions (or at least limited "domestic partnerships") enjoy majority support. People will see the example of Massachusetts (once again a "city upon a hill" but for very different reasons than Winthrop imagined) and realize that gay marriage is not the end of the world. It's just a matter of time.

I would like to see the various governments drop the use of the word "marriage" and use only "civil unions". But the number of different places the term shows up in laws is huge. It would be hard to make all the changes, but it would be worth seperating the religious and civil concepts entirely.
